St. Peters Bay Courthouse was built in
1874.Throughout its history it served as a courthouse, schoolhouse
and now it is a commuity-based theatre.
Prior
to Prince Edward Island entering Confederation in 1873, county
court existed in Charlottetown, Summerside and Georgetown.
St. Peter's Bay was designated to be the
place of the first circuit of the King's County Courts by
the County Court Act of 1873.
The courthouse was also used as a schoolhouse
for grades 9 &10.
St. Peter's is very close to Cable Head,
which is where the Turrett Bell was shipwrecked in the Gale
of 1906. This storm was the cause for other shipwrecks in
the area. The Turrett Bell was a big stir in the community
due to the size of the ship and the wonderment that one so
large was still in tact sitting on the shore.
Prince Edward Island has had many shipwrecks
in the early years due to the many sandbars that surround
the island. The difficulty for the captains was the shifting
of the sandbars that occurs during storms.
St. Peter's Harbour is noted for much island
history, as it is the settlement of the first French commercial
settlement on P.E.I., Roma. Jean Pierre Roma also made the
first roads in Prince Edward Island and they were from Brudenell
Point, Roma's winter camp to St. Peter's Harbour. The Harbour
is the entrance to St. Peter's Bay.
The Greenwich National Park, which is located
in St. Peter's Bay has an interpretative center that tells
the history of the area.
When the railway service on Prince Edward
Island was finished all the railway ties were picked up and
a walking and bike trail was completed. This trail is called “Confederation
Trail”. The portion that runs along the St. Peter's
Bay and into the village is one of the most picturesque on
the island.
Be sure to visit the St. Peter's Theatre
and ask about the ghost of “Effie”who use to
wave to every train that ran through St. Peter's Bay.
If you are interested in having a good
time be sure to call for reservations as it is a popular
event in the eastern region of Prince Edward Island.
